Bringing
Down the House
Touchstone
Home Entertainment
- This sleek comedy about a
busy lawyer Peter (Steve Martin) whose experiment with
internet dating bombs when an escaped prisoner Charlene
(Queen Latifah) latches onto him. She needs to prove
her innocence and in the process, Charlene invigorates
Peter's life. While Peter is appalled by Charlene's
behavior, his best friend (Eugene Levy) is charmed.
"You've got me straight-trippin' boo!" he
coos and like Levy, viewers will fall in love too. This
is funny, funny stuff! There is only one problem. While
the film correctly spotlights Peter's neighbor's (Betty
White) racism, they miscalculate his client's (Joan
Plowright) behavior. The laughs stop when Plowright
utters her lines! Nevertheless, Martin and Latifah are
a super team.
The disc includes deleted scenes,
a funny gag reel, two hip featurettes: "The Godfather
of Hop with Levy and a behind-the-scenes and an audio
commentary.

The
Life of David Gale
Paramount
Pictures Collections
- Kevin Spacey stars as a respected
professor who is charged with a horrific crime and decides
to give his only interview on death row to NY reporter
(Kate Winslet). What David Gale (Spacey) reveals is
a troubled life and a frustrated advocate. Can the reporter
truly believe what he's saying. Alan Parker's film is
a disturbing look at the emotional make-up of the personality
of an advocate tucked in a suspenseful thriller. The
shocking ending may or may not be a surprise.
The disc includes a feature commentary
with Parker, deleted scenes, music featurette and DVD-ROM
material.

The
Quiet American
Miramax
Home Entertainment
- Graham Greene's classic story
of an aging journalist (Michael Caine) in a love triangle
with a mysterious young American (Brendan Fraser) who
is trying to steal his beautiful Asian mistress. Set
in the sultry tropics of 1950s Vietnam before the American
military became embroiled in their fatal war, "The
Quiet American" is an intelligent look at a pre-war
era through a dark, lurid tale. Caine was nominated
for an Academy Award and he gives a stellar performance.
This is a truly superb film.
The disc includes several fascinating
featurettes: 'Anatomy of A scene', a behind the scene
look, feature commentary with the director, Caine and
Fraser and DVD-ROM study guide of Vietnam.
