DEAD LIKE ME: The Complete Second Season
MGM Home Entertainment

- The Second Season of this zany dark comedy finds George (Ellen Muth), the 18-year-old Grim Reaper adjusting to her new life after death with a certain maturity and grace. George has found a job at Happy Time Temp Agency that not only supplies her with cash but with another sense of purpose. She must find jobs for hungry candidates. She also has a pleasant house to live in; a resonable roommate in the "Golden Age" screen starlet, Daisy ( Laura Harris) and a family with her fellow Grim Reapers -- the wise Rube (Mandy Patinkin), the tough-talking Roxy (Jasmine Guy) and tender-hearted screw-up Mason (Callum Blue).

"Dead Like Me's" second season has less anger despite the conflict between George's parents. Joy Lesser (Cynthia Stevenson) yells alot less and even regains her sense of self with a possible new suitor. All of the actors seem alot more comfortable with their roles because the series producers have given them more life and texture. Roxy finds her calling as a cop; Daisy searches for spiritual fulfillment and fear of death scares several of the Reapers. Most important, George yearns for more -- like a boyfriend! Of course, who knew that the dead could have love affairs with the living. In fact, Daisy's relationship with a charming but smarmy TV producer played by an almost unrecognizable Eric McCormick from TV's "Will and Grace" proves to be a big mistake. McCormick is dark, sexy and brilliant as Ray. There's also a tender peak into Rube's past and endless fumblings by Mason who can't seem to grow up! Furthermore, a curious twist with an unexpected death and a distrubing serial killer who gives the reapers several victims in one night. But, mostly the series is funny, dark and still quirky.

The four disc set includes a lot of deleted scenes that further illuminate some of the stories and several intriuging looks at the techical CGI that gives the show it's unique look. The creative process regarding the ugly Death Gravelings is cool. I think the second season is so good that first time viewers will fall in love with the series.
