I didn't blink when I noticed that David Duchovny's
first movie role, after exiting his hit TV show,
"X-Files," was Evolution. Duchovny,
who is a decent actor, is going to find that it's
tough getting decent movie work after such a long
run on network television. But, how could he pass
up a role that gave him a chance to be this laid
back and funny! Nevertheless, despite Evolution's
funny moments, the film is overloaded with ugly
sci-fi insects and special effects.
When a meteor slams into the Arizona desert,
alien organisms are unleashed and grow at an alarming
rate. Two community college science professors
(Duchovny and Orlando Jones) team up with a hapless
fireman (Seann William Scott) trying to contain
the situation. The Army is definitely botching
the operation. Unfortunately, Evolution
quickly becomes long and tedious despite a few
bright moments like the big snatching up the shoplifter
in the mall.
Obviously, Julianne Moore needed a break from
"Hannibal" so she took the role because it gave
her a chance to a klutzy scientist who isn't quite
comfortable with being a woman. Orlando Jones
("The Replacements") is such
a buffoon that he doesn't bother to create a believable
character and Seann William Scott ("American
Pie", "AP2"), is typecasting himself,
with these smart-aleck guys. Director Ivan Reitman
loves to pit the slobs vs. the snobs in his films
but even this familiar convention isn't enough
to save Evolution.
