I love silly movies because their intent
is to make you laugh at the most ordinary
things in life. Johnny English
starring British TV star, Rown Atkinson
is incredibly silly and it is laugh-out-loud
funny!
Atkinson is a British bureaucratic
whose dream of being a debonair secret
agent comes true after he inadvertently
kills off most of the legitimate agents.
Johnny English is the anti-James Bond
agent. He never does anything right!
While he correctly identifies the nemesis
to the British throne as the distant
French businessman Pascal Sauvage (John
Malkovich), English can’t convince
his superior Pegasus (Tim Pigott-Smith)
of this fact. So, he stalks Sauvage
with the help of Interpol agent Lorna
Campbell (Natalie Imbruglia) and his
trusty assistant Bough (Ben Miller).
In fact, Lorna is more capable and Bough
is more accomplished as an agent but
English never gives up!
Rown Atkinson is best known in the United
States from the British TV imports Black
Adder and Mr. Bean.
He is hysterically funny as the suave
nincompoop who shoots a secretary in
the ass with a paralyzing dart and crawls
through a toilet pipeline in a French
chateau. Yes, we’ve seen this
spoof before in Austin Powers
but only Atkinson’s can milk laughs
while standing in a white evening jacket
and covered with crap!
Of course, most people will be surprised
at John Malkovich’s over-the-top
French fop, Pascal Sauvage. But it fits
with this idiotic movie that pokes fun
at James Bond films – the car
with the missiles and ejector button,
the clothes and the fast cars. I know
silly comedies are not everyone’s
favorites but I love them!
