It’s a shame that Paramount Pictures lost confidence in AEON FLUX and decided not the screen it for critics. Frankly, I found the film exciting and visually intriguing. Charlize Theron delivers a sexy, enthralling action character in this futuristic thriller about an assassin who is out to set the people of the last remaining city on earth free.

Aeon Flux (Theron) is a secret operative who works with a rebel group called the Monicans. When her Handler (Frances McDormand Fargo) gives her the OK on the assassination of Trevor Goodchild (Marton Csokas Kingdom of Heaven), the ruler of Bregna, she relishes the assignment. He may be the benevolent dictator of this sanitized world but since his authority is absolute, then he must be responsible for the disappearance of its mild-mannered citizenry. Sometime ago, Aeon Flux lost a beloved sister who was murdered without explanation and she’s out for revenge. Of course, once Trevor is alerted to her mission, his government led by his brother, Orin (Jonny Lee Miller Trainspotting) will stop at nothing to retain their power.

This sleek, clever techno world is similar to others that we’ve seen in sci-fi films. It is modern, cold, emotionless and fully armed with razor-sharp grass and blow-darts flying from trees. But, Aeon Flux and her protégé, Sithandra (Oscar nominee for Hotel Rwanda, Sophie Okondedo) discover that Trevor’s fortress has numerous secrets – the strain between the brothers and trouble with the method of longevity. Aeon Flux realizes that she must alter her mission to discover deeper meaning to Trevor’s actions.

AEON FLUX is wiry, cool and sexy with the heroine in tight black costumes and long sleek legs that kick butt without hesitation. Based on Peter Chung’s MTV Liquid Television series, the story is straight-forward with lots of fire-fights and martial art confrontations. Watching Charlize Theron perform various acrobatic feats is breathtaking and exhilarating! This is a character that she might want to return to if futures scripts are right. Theron won an Academy Award for her portrayal of a female serial killer in Monster and gives a riveting performance early this year as a tormented steel worker in the drama, North Country but she is talented enough to captivate audiences with a lighter, quirky character like Aeon Flux.

I think sci-fi fans of the TV series and the audience attracted to the electric visual of Charlize Theron souring through the air will be delighted with AEON FLUX.
