The best thing about this coming-of-age Southern drama, Broken Bridges, is the music! Toby Keith and Kelly Preston star as estranged lovers who return to their home town after each loses a brother in a military training crash. Bo Price (Keith) is a well-known country musician who has fallen on hard times because of his excessive drunkenness. Angela (Preston) is a Miami-based feature TV reporter with a rebellious teenage daughter, Dixie (Lindsey Haun, who she raised alone after being abandoned by Bo. She decides to drag Dixie back home to Georgia for the first time to meet her estranged family. While her mother (Tess Harper) is glad to see her, stubborn father (Burt Reynolds) scoffs at them. When Bo shows up at the family doorstep, everyone is stunned. One can easily
guess what is going to happen. Away from the fast life of Miami, slowly,
Dixie adjusts to rural Southern living and settles down while her parents
and grandparents start to forgive one another. There are some feel good
tunes (from Keith and Willie Nelson) and decent performances from most
of the cast which also includes Anna Maria Horsford, as the wise, faithful
black domestic. Toby Keith maybe tall but his acting is slow and wooden.
Even Burt Reynolds has been better. Kelly Preston is very good and so
is newcomer, Lindsey Haun. Everything about Broken Bridges
is cliché but families looking for mild-mannered movies for youngster
will probably enjoy the film. |
