Few people would argue that Denzel Washington isn’t the coolest guy in the movies and working with director Tony Scott (Man on Fire) gives him a sleek macho edge that says he’s up for the action. In Scott’s latest film, Déjà vu, Washington plays a smart ATF agent, Doug Carlin who links the death of a beautiful young woman (newcomer Paula Patton) to a horrific terrorist explosion on a New Orleans ferry.

As Carlin walks around the dead woman’s apartment, her beautiful Creole image begin to haunt him. Later, when his excellent work attracts the attention of an FBI agent (beefy Val Kilmer), Carlin is introduced to the members of an elite unit with an unbelievable new technological gadget. These scientific wizards explain in the most confusing way possible that they can travel back in time and possibly linking the explosion to the young woman’s murder. Post-Katrina New Orleans looks sexy and alluring in this big-budget movie and it’s clear that Washington’s ATF agent is falling in love with the tragic Ms. Patton. Film buffs may think of the romantic thriller, Laura but Tony Scott's intentions doesn't come close.

The success of Déjà vu depends upon the audience’s ability to suspend logical beliefs and buy into the premise that time travel is possible. Scott certainly makes it very exciting especially the weird chase scene where Washington is shadowing the bomber (a spooky Jim Caviezel) in real time while the team is watching him in the past. What makes this movie thrilling is Denzel Washington giving his all and I believe audiences will love it, too.
