Jake Lloyd Interview Jake Lloyd

By Veronica Mixon

Jake Lloyd, a feisty and charming fourth grader, is the luckiest kid in the world! As the boy who becomes Darth Vadar, Lloyd plays the gifted Anakin Skywalker. The spunky youngster, who has been acting since he was five-years-old, caught the eye of a cast director after his 1996 appearing in "Unhook the Stars" and "Jungle All the Way" opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sinbad. He proved to be very comfortable on the technical set and working with blue screens. Now, the ten-year-old only hopes that he'll grow up enough to be considered for Episode 2.

The Interview

How did you get the part? My agent called me and she was like 'oh, how would you like to go to England for four months?' I said, 'I'd rather go to Antarctica.' Then, she told me that I got "Star Wars."

What was it like shooting in the desert? It was hot. I worked 9 1/2 hours a day in the summer because it was the only time my parents would let me work.

Did you know who Darth Vader was? Yeah, when I was five I dressed like Darth Vader for Halloween.

What do you think of Darth Vader? He's a good guy. He kills the emperor [in "Return of the Jedi"] and I think that's enough to redeem him. He also has so many chances to kill Luke Skywalker and many other people he didn't. He could have run away from his mom and laughed and said, 'Ah ha! I'm not going to free you. I was lying. Ahaha!' He didn't have to free the slaves. He could have wanted to pod race because he enjoys its, not because he can help his friends. So, personally, I think Darth Vader is an overall good guy. He does bring balance to the force. There's only Jedi.

Do you know what's going to happen in future films? Oh, I do but I'm sworn to secrecy. They know where I live. You know how they always say, 'The government could be listening. LucasFilm could be listening.'

Did you have a favorite character in the film? Ahmed [Best] played my favorite critter, Jar Jar but I also liked the kid gungan. I also liked Syllabus because he came from Maul's star.

What is the force? Scientifically, I don't even think it exists. But, otherwise, the force is midichlorins inside any creature's body and without midichlorins, we couldn't survive and they couldn't survive.

What was it like working with Liam Neeson? He was very professional and I really, really respected him for that. He treated me like a real actor, not like a kid. It was like hanging out with some friends.

What was the hardest day? The hardest thing to do was to leave the set at the end of the shoot. For months, you are practically living with these guys and it's so easy to bond with nice people.

Do you like the action figures? I like them. They're really fun. I have all the Episode 1 figures and Darth Maul's double edge light saber. I have the talking figures, too. My favorite action figure is Jar Jar - and the COM link and computer chip. You swipe the COM link over Ahmed and he said, 'Ahh, youse talkin' to me? Gungans no likin outsiders.'

Who are your heroes? Arnold Schwarzenegger has been my hero since I was two.

Do you think it's crazy if kids stand in line to buy the toys? Kids aren't nuts standing in line to buy dolls because they're standing in line to buy dolls of me.

What other summer movies are you looking forward to seeing? I want to see "The Mummy," the new "Austin Powers" and "Wild Wild West." Will Smith is the best. I think "Star Wars" and "Wild Wild West" will be equally amazing.

So, being in this film was a good career move. If this is Everest, "Star Wars" is camp four. There are four camps, then there is the summit.
