Katie Holmes, who plays the former tomboy, Joey
on Dawson's Creek has blossomed into a gorgeous
young woman. While Abandon is her first leading
role, Holmes has turned in some well-crafted supporting
performances in Go, The Ice Storm, Disturbing
Behavior, Teaching Mrs. Tingle, The Gift
as well as a seductive co-ed in Wonder
Boys.
Tall, elegant and pretty, Holmes is working on
the last year of her hit television series and
she's poised for big screen stardom. She is currently
dating American Pie star, Chris Klein.
Katie Holmes met with Film Gazette in New York
City to talk about her new movie.
THE INTERVIEW
Why did you want to do this movie?
I love the world of college students. Being in
your twenties is a very exciting, difficult, scary
time and in this particular college setting, it's
one of the best colleges and it's so full of pressure.
It's a cool place to set to set a psychological
thriller plus I really liked that character of
Katie Burke. She's very complicated. When I was
introduced to her in the script, I thought I'd
love to play her. She's the one that all the guys
want to ask out, she's smart, everybody likes
her and then to see that she's very human. She's
got problems, she's scared and lonely and heart
broken.
Is she every woman?
She's an all achiever and she's a Type A personality.
I think her emotions are very relateable I think
she's flawed like everyone. She doesn't realize
that she is like everyone and she can show that.
Having the opportunity to play someone like her
and have to go through so many emotions, it's
a huge challenge. I spend so much time crying
on "Dawson's Creek." Someone told me never show
them that you can cry because you'll cry in every
episode and I did for a while. I thought maybe
I will try it on the big screen.
You're the star of this movie. Any pressure?
Right now, I don't feel any pressure. I'm happy
with the final product and I can choose to worry
about it and not enjoy my trip to New York and
not enjoy the month up until the movie and the
same results will happen.
Talk about working with Charlie Hunnam? He
said he was knocked out when you did the first
scene together. It was a scene not in the movie.
He was? Oh, yeah. I really liked him and I thought
he was great. I wanted to do a good job for him.
He knew back then. He'd done "Queer as Folk" and
he was getting ready to do Undeclared.
I said, I want to give you some tips, Charlie.
Just in fun and he was great about it. I thought
he-I think he's got so much potential and he's
going to do really well. He's a smart guy.
And, what was it like working with Benjamin
Bratt?
Cool. Chemistry is such a weird thing. I feel
you obviously can't create and if you have it,
great. We read together and we just clicked. We
had a really nice time together and I learned
a lot from him like an older brother type figure.
He's a nice supporting friend throughout the movie.
He has a lot of experience in this business so
for a young person, I could say 'Let me ask you
about this?'
Would you and Chris Klein ever work together?
Yeah. I think he's a really great actor and I'd
be very nervous if he set foot on the set of "Dawson's
Creek." Although, I'd never tell him. Why?
Well, when you're acting with good people, you
have to be on your game. Would Chris ever be on
"Dawson?" We'll see. That would be fun.
That would be my turf.
How do you think the season should wind up?
I don't know. I just had dinner with our writers
and I don't know, they don't know. Just no wedding
between Dawson and Joey! I think that's horrible.
Don't do that. I think to be true to the show,
we always have a bittersweet moments.
Is working on films easier than television?
No, it's definitely much different. I have time
on movie sets to hang out. Television show goes
so fast. You barely have time to go to the bathroom.
Fine. What are we doing now? So, they're both
fun. It's such a different pace that the first
couple of days working on a movie, I'm so tired
because I haven't done anything all day.
What are you going to do with your house in
South Carolina?
I don't know. I think I need a place so that
15 years from now, I take my kids and make them
appreciate "Dawson's Creek." Growing
up on Dawson, who do you see on first season?
It's fun to look back because what I think was
amazing that first season was - what I think a
lot of people loved about it - it captured people's
innocence and it was true innocence. I particularly
loved the first and second season. In the first
season, there was so much possibility and we were
having the best time. We were excited about life.
In the second season, these people who have absolutely
no idea what to do with their lives. Just excited.
Have you decided to go to college after "Dawson's
Creek" ends?
I don't know. I may need a little for time to
gear up. I'm not gonna put a lot pressure on myself
to go right away. I definitely think college is
an opportunity and a gift for everyone who is
able to go. I feel honored to have been accepted
at Columbia.
Do you know where you want to go?
I have no idea. I'm nervous about this end of
the Creek business because you have to decide
where you're going to live and who you're going
to be. I might just decide to stay on the beach
in Wilmington and not deal with it for a while.
Maybe, I'll take a hiatus. For now, I really love
doing what I'm doing. I've been fortunate to have
had these opportunities and I'm just gonna see
where it takes me. .
